Typescript and commonplace book of articles, photographs, and magazine clippings from Country Life which concern a portrait of Sir Robert Walpole and his wife, Lady Cathering Shorter, and their estate, Houghton Hall. The volume begins with a typed summary of the provenance and subsequent history of the portrait and its frame, including its place at Strawberry Hill, the estate of Horace Walpole, Sir Robert Walpole's youngest son. Pasted in this section are letters from Edward Hudson, editor of the magazine Country Life, corresponding with Dighton about the painting and frame. This introduction is followed byan essay from Country Life concerning Houghton Hall by Henry Avray Tipping, which traces the history of the Walpole family, the architectural history of Houghton, details about its interior decorations, and its subsequent owners. The volume also includes many photographs of the estate's exteriors and interior furnishings, which originally accompanied the article in the magazine. This article is followed by another article by Tipping in Country Life, dated July 5 1924, on the architectural history of Strawberry Hill, Horace Walpole's estate, accompanied by photographs.

Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh.
